5 New Year’s Skin Resolutions

January 3, 2017

Sunscreen is critical to protecting your skin.

Your skin is the largest organ of your body. Between pollution, unprotected sun exposure, and non-existent skin care routines, it can really take a beating. It’s time to break some of your bad habits and avoid common skin mistakes to give your skin a break.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve made a lot of skin mistakes when it comes to my own beauty regimen. Back in the day, I would sunbathe with baby oil in pursuit of the perfect tan. When that wasn’t possible, I would visit a tanning salon. I washed my face with any old bar soap and I wasn’t a regular user of body lotion. Yikes! Who was that girl? Oh, if I only knew then what I know now. I’m sure we’ve all cringed at our beauty mistakes over the years, but it’s time to stop the cycle. I’m going to reveal my top five New Year’s resolutions to benefit the health of your skin.

Using the Right Cleanser

Cleansing is the first step in any skin care regimen, and that cleanser choice is important. So many people make the mistake of picking up any old random bar of soap to wash their face. Most bar soaps that are designed to cleanse your body contain harsh deodorizers and detergents that are not gentle enough for your face. Evaluate your skin to determine what type of cleanser your skin requires. If it’s oily, look for a cleanser to target sebum production. Perhaps a lightweight foaming gel cleanser would be best. If your skin is on the dry side, look for a cleanser that will moisturize the skin while cleansing. A lotion-based cleanser may be perfect for you. Pay attention to your skin and choose the right cleanser. But, whatever you do, put down that ordinary bar soap.

Don’t Worship the Sun

If you’re like me, this is the area where you tend to make your biggest skin mistakes. Yes, I too will admit that I think I look better with a nice suntan and look forward to that summer sun-kissed glow. But it’s the lengths we go to in order to get that look that’s the problem. Put down the tanning oil and pick up the sunscreen. And whatever you do, avoid tanning beds at all costs. It’s important to protect our skin from the sun’s damaging UVA and UVB rays. These rays burn our skin and are a leading contributor to early aging. You might look good with that savage tan today but flash-forward and you might not be happy with the wrinkly person staring back at you from the mirror. Sunscreen is critical when it comes to protecting your skin and you should never go out into the sun without it. Sunless tanners have come a long way and you don’t need to worry about the orange ‘fake bake’ look anymore. And the best part is you can get that gorgeous tan 12 months out of the year.

Avoid Over-scrubbing

I think we can all agree that we love the way we look after a good buffing and polishing. But, there is such thing as too much of a good thing. Exfoliation of the face and the body is something that we all should be doing on a regular basis. But we need to be gentle. Remember, your skin is a living organ and you need to take care of it. The last thing you want to do is scrub your skin so much that it becomes red and irritated. Take it easy when cleansing and exfoliating. Use soft and gentle circular motions to achieve the most desirable skin. Nothing good can come from over-scrubbing your skin.

Never Pop Pimples

I would place a major bet on the fact that everyone reading this is guilty of popping a pimple or two. It’s so tempting to do that it seems almost unavoidable. But, it’s very important to resist the urge to jab at outbreaks. Every time you start attacking a pimple, you run the risk of making the problem even worse. You can spread bacteria to other areas of your face. The troubling spot can now look bigger and much redder than before. Not only that but, the picking could result in permanent scarring. No matter what, please resist the urge to pop those pimples and be patient in weathering the breakout storm.

Reduce Stress

It’s amazing how a lack of sleep and stress can negatively impact your skin. It’s impossible to look your best when you’re exhausted and stressed out. Your skin loses its glow and vibrancy, the circles under your eyes become darker and more apparent. Beyond that, you just look, well dare I say it… old! Remember, we call it “beauty sleep” for a reason because we definitely look our best when we’re well rested. You’d be surprised at just how many people aren’t getting enough hours of sleep in a night. So, for the sake of our skin, get a good night’s sleep and try to unwind and relax.

How to Prepare a Party Emergency Beauty Kit

December 27, 2016

Be prepared for any beauty emergency.

It’s party season! This party survival guide will help you stay beautiful and confident no matter what life throws at you.

‘Tis the season to get glammed up and visit friends and loved ones. But all that rushing around can sometimes result in beauty disasters––from lipstick on the teeth to frizzy party hair and more. Luckily, a little bit of preparation can go a long way towards preventing beauty mishaps! Try these beauty tips before and during your party to look your best all night long.

Before the party: Pack your beauty bag

This season, try preparing a mini “party emergency kit” that you can stash in your car, or tuck it into your handbag in case you need it. By preparing a kit ahead of time, you can be confident that you’ll be able to face any potential beauty disasters head-on. My personal party emergency kit contains:

  • Mini deodorant – We’ve all forgotten deodorant at one point or another. It’s not an experience I like repeating, so I keep this with me in my party kit!
  • Travel toothbrush and toothpaste – For when gum or mints just won’t do. (Garlicky bruschetta, anyone?)
  • Pain reliever – You can’t dance the night away if you’re only thinking about that headache. Pain reliever lets you focus on the fun at hand!
  • Hand cream – Most of us hug and shake hands at parties, so that means we wash our hands more than usual. I keep my hands soft by keeping hand cream within reach.
  • Travel perfume – I save all the little samples of perfume I get, so I’m always prepared in case I forget before I leave the house.
  • Detergent pen – Never worry about random party snack stains again.
  • Dryer sheets – I run these (gently!) over my hair to tame flyaways. The added bonus is that they make your handbag smell heavenly!

Before the party: Streamline for success

When you’re trying to rush out the door to get to a party, the last thing you want to do is add unnecessary steps to your beauty routine. Here are three easy tips that will make you party-ready without adding too much additional work for you:

Face: Prevent lipstick on the teeth by applying extra lip balm to the center of your lips (towards the inside). This will add just enough slipperiness that lipstick won’t be able to adhere to the surface of teeth.

Body: Add a little oil to your moisturizer for smooth, radiant legs. Adding just a little drop of olive oil to your normal lotion will help add a subtle sheen to legs, reflecting light and distracting from any potential blemishes, stretch marks, or veins.

Hair: Wait until your hair is dry before using product. With the exception of products meant to be used on wet hair, such as leave-in conditioner, most hair products just don’t work effectively on damp hair. Wait until your hair is completely dry before styling.

At the party: Get creative

Sometimes beauty emergencies pop up that even your party emergency kit can’t handle. Here are a few of my favorite creative tips to solving beauty problems on the fly:

  • Cool down pimples with ice. Feel a blemish coming on? Simply take an ice cube from a drink and rub it over the blemish for a few seconds. This will minimize the swelling.
  • Calm flyaways with hand lotion. With just a dab of hand lotion, run your hands through your hair. The weight of the lotion will smooth hair, just be sure to not use too much!
  • Matte oily skin with a toilet cover. It may sound funny, and this should be a last resort, but that super-thin paper that you find in public restrooms to cover toilet seats actually works wonders as blotting paper. Simply rip off a small piece and rub over your face to absorb excess oil.
  • Smooth jagged nails with a matchbox. The striking surface will double as a nail file in a pinch.
  • Prevent bad breath with a slice of lemon. If you’ve been snacking on party food, chances are you might want to freshen up. If you don’t have a toothbrush or mints with you, try sucking on a slice of lemon. The citrus aids in saliva production, which will help quell bad breath.

The most important thing is that you feel confident and beautiful out and about. If you follow my beauty emergency tips, I think you’ll find that no party snafu is too much for you to handle. You can focus your attention where it belongs––on having a great time!

Manage Holiday Stress in the Name of Beauty

December 19, 2016

Take time to relax and de-stress to

enjoy the holidays.

The holiday season can often come with stress and sleepless nights. It’s the perfect time to focus on a little rest and relaxation in the name of beauty.

It’s supposed to be “the most wonderful time of the year.” It’s a time when families come together to celebrate the holidays, give back to their communities, exchange gifts and prepare their favorite family meals. It sounds simple enough, doesn’t it? Unfortunately, this particular time also comes with stress and sleepless nights. There is so much to do and never enough time to do it. Jam-packed parking lots and stores, endless holiday cards to send and searching for gifts for the ones you love can take a toll. And with all of the holiday parties we have to attend, looking our best can be a challenge.

It’s time to focus on a little R&R in the name of healthy looking skin. Can it be done? Absolutely! Does stress and lack of sleep really affect our appearance? You bet it does. Unfortunately, when we are feeling stressed or tired on the inside, it also shows on the outside. And trust me, it’s not a good look. A good night’s sleep and a bit of relaxation can truly affect your inner and outer beauty.

Here are a few ways to unwind during the holidays so you can look and feel your absolute best!

Relax

I know it seems impossible to relax during the hectic holiday season, but it’s a MUST in the name of beauty. Stress can wreak havoc on both your appearance and your overall wellness, including your heart, digestion, weight, memory and sleep. When it comes to our skin, stress can bring on breakouts and cause dehydration, which can lead to fine lines and wrinkles. Stress can cause hormonal imbalances and affect our skin’s barrier function, which could potentially affect our immune system. And don’t get me started on the effects of stress on the hair. If you aren’t interested in turning gray or experiencing hair loss over the holidays, then it’s time to unwind.

To help you relax, it’s important to find a little “me” time even during the busiest time of the year. If you can find just five minutes a day to do a little meditation, it will serve you and your appearance well. Just by entering into a relaxed, peaceful state you can release chemicals into your body that will help to counter the stress hormones you are creating. It’s so simple!

Here are a few tips to try:

  • Find your “happy place.” Look for a place that is quiet and removed from the holiday chaos. A comfy little spot just for you will do.
  • Close your eyes, sit up straight and tall, and place your hands in your lap.
  • Slowly begin to breathe. Inhale through your nose until your lungs are filled, and then slowly exhale through your mouth. Deep breathing will help to slow your heart rate and inspire a feeling of calm. It will also help to lower your blood pressure.
  • If you can dedicate even more than five minutes, do it. A few extra minutes out of your crazy day will only help you to further alleviate your stress levels.

Managing stress can be difficult. We need to take advantage of every opportunity to get our stress levels under wraps.

Here are a few of my favorite stress reducers:

  • Soaking in a bubble bath
  • Practicing yoga to help train the mind and body to better deal with daily chaos
  • Listening to music (preferably while soaking in the tub)
  • Shopping online, which is a huge time and stress reducer during the hectic holidays
  • Watching TV or a movie
  • Reading a book or the latest fashion magazine
  • Taking a brisk walk around the neighborhood

Once you have mastered the art of relaxing, you will likely notice a change in your appearance, as well as your demeanor. In addition to relaxing, we must also get a good night’s sleep, or it’s all for nothing. Many people admit to losing sleep at night due to stress. And others admit to being even more stressed out because they are too tired to deal with holiday activities. It’s a vicious cycle.

Get Some Sleep

Remember, as crazy as it sounds, we call it “beauty sleep” for a reason. I often say a good night’s sleep should be everyone’s number one, go-to beauty tip. There is nothing like that youthful, healthy looking glow you get after a good sleep. Couple a good night’s sleep with your favorite nighttime skin care products and you will look fantastic and refreshed. During the holidays we tend to stay up later celebrating, wrapping presents or putting the finishing touches on our favorite DIY holiday project. Whatever the case, this is not the time to skimp on sleep. When we don’t get enough sleep, our bodies release more cortisol than usual. Cortisol, a stress hormone, in excess can have us looking tired and stressed out in no time. Our skin can become a bit inflamed and it can affect our collagen. And over time you will begin to notice less firmness in your skin and compromised elasticity. The result: fine lines, wrinkles and dry skin.

A restless night also shows under our eyes. There is no amount of concealer that will cover those dark under-eye circles when we are exhausted. When we don’t sleep, the blood vessels found directly under the skin around the eyes become dilated and we end up looking like a raccoon.

When we are sleeping, our body goes into repair mode. This is when the repairing and renewing of our cells occurs. This is vital for our entire body, but when it comes to our skin it also helps to fend off early aging. Think of sleep as your most important beauty aid, and do your best to get a good eight hours every night. A good night’s sleep will make it easier to face the daily stresses this season. After all, we want to look our best during the holidays.

Tips for a Good Night’s Sleep During the Holidays

  • Keep your bedroom cool, under 70 degrees if possible
  • Make sure your room is dark––black-out shades will definitely help
  • Turn off the TV, computer, phone, etc. before crawling into bed
  • Invest in a nice, comfy pair of PJ’s while doing your holiday shopping––a special treat to help you survive the season

The holidays are what we make of them. And this really is a wonderful time of year that we all should be able to enjoy to its fullest. It’s all about friends and family. And everyone wants to look their best, rested and relaxed. After all, we have a brand new year to look forward to. So, let’s look our best in the name of reduced stress!

Six Ways to Camouflage Dark Circles

December 5, 2016

Hydrating does wonders for your skin.

Are your sparkling eyes getting dragged down by dark under-eye circles? We all get them on occasion and some of us seem to be stuck with them long-term. There are a few things that we can all do to help take the spotlight off of the dark circles and put it back on our eyes.

Those dark circles under our eyes can be such a downer. They make us look older and they make us look tired. I hate waking up to find dark circles just jumping off of my face. What color are my eyes? I have no idea because all I see are raccoon eyes! Not an attractive look for women or men.

Dark circles are only cute on Panda Bears

Dark circles for most of us are the result of fatigue, allergies, excessive rubbing of the eyes and even certain skin conditions, such as atopic or contact dermatitis. For others it’s due to heredity, and some ethnicities are more prone to dark circles than others. Under-eye dark circles are the result of thinning skin and loss of collagen and fat. Unfortunately this becomes more common as we start to age.

This thinning can make the reddish-blue blood vessels found under our eyes much more noticeable.

While there are many creams, serums and gels on the market to combat dark circles, it’s hard to find that perfect product. And sometimes it can take months before we start to see an improvement. But all hope is not lost. There are things we can do in the interim to help improve our overall look.

Here are some easy tips to help camouflage the area and reduce the appearance of those unsightly dark circles.

Put the focus on the eyes, not the skin around the eyes

Make your eyes stand out with my one go-to tip––an eyelash curler! Men, don’t tune out because this tip can work for you, too. You can pick up an inexpensive eyelash curler at any drug store. The curling will instantly make your eyes look larger by casting a shadow onto your brow bone. If you wear mascara, only apply to your top lashes. If you apply mascara to your bottom lashes, you run the risk of casting a shadow that will only add darkness to the skin under your eyes. I’ve mentioned in a previous post that an eyelash curler is one of my beauty must haves—once you start using one, you can never turn back!

A little tweezing goes a long way

There is nothing like the power of well-shaped eyebrows to help open up your eyes. Again, this tip is not just for women. Men should also be conscientious of their eyebrows to make sure they are well groomed. Get rid of any strays and tweeze just slightly to help accent the natural arch in your brow. Not comfortable doing this yourself? After one too many tweezing mishaps, I certainly can relate! Have your eyebrows done professionally the first time so you can see the difference, and get a better understanding of just where a few plucks will make a difference.

Just say no to lower lid lining

We tend to like the look of perfectly lined lids. However, by lining your lower lid, you risk putting emphasis on your dark circles. If eyeliner is your thing, apply a darker shade only on top. And if you must line your lower lid, choose a color that’s lighter. It’s a simple trick that really does work.

Perfect the art of eye shadow

Makeup is an amazing beauty tool. The more you practice your technique, the better you will be able to apply cosmetics. When it comes to eye shadow, try to avoid using dark colors on your upper eyelids. If you have dark circles, a smoky eye might not be the best look for you. Try using cooler pinks, light, natural mochas or plum colors. Or better yet, go for a monochromatic eye. Use one single shade of eye shadow in a lighter shade, and apply on your eyelid and brow bone. Use highlighter on your brow bone and the inner corner of your eyes to help brighten the area. By keeping your makeup fresh and neutral, it will definitely draw the attention away from the under eye area. Be sure to have fun with your look and play around with colors to see what works for you.

Cover up with concealer

A good concealer is your best line of defense against dark under-eye circles. While I know that most men don’t wear makeup, there is nothing wrong with a little concealer to help banish the dark circles! If you do it correctly, no one will even notice you’re wearing it. It’s important when using concealer to always counterbalance the most prominent under tone of your dark circles. Yellow-based concealers are perfect for most dark circles. But this is trial and error. I learned a long time ago not to try to shade match my foundations or concealers by myself. What looked good in the store always looked a bit off when I applied it at home. I have an entire drawer of only-worn-once products due to my miscalculations. Now I rely on the experts at the cosmetic counters to help me pick the right shades. They are a huge help and provide a service that ultimately can save a lot of time and money.

Make sure your concealer shade is a bit lighter than your skin tone or foundation. Look for something that’s creamy in texture so it won’t settle into any fine lines and cracks during the day. Don’t make the mistake of using too much concealer or applying it under your entire eye. Only apply the product where the actual dark circles are. Usually this is a small semi-circle that starts near your inner eye and goes downwards towards your cheek. Use your fingers, damp makeup sponge or a soft brush to apply your concealer to the dark areas only. It’s always a good idea to apply your concealer last. This way, you can be sure to clean up any makeup that may have landed in the under-eye area prior to applying. Remember, use your concealer sparingly. You don’t want to draw even more attention to the area.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

If you really want to take care of the skin around your eyes and ensure that your makeup goes on smoothly, invest in a quality hydrating eye cream or gel. Hydration always makes the skin look a bit plumper and smoother. This will only help with the application of your concealer and truly help diminish the appearance of those dark circles. And, yes, gentlemen this means you, too. Both men and women will benefit from a good skin care regimen, and a hydrating eye product is a necessity.

I really wish there was a magical product to eliminate dark circles once and for all. Until then, we can continue to look for some quick fixes through trial and error.

Holiday Beauty Tips

November 21, 2016

Tips to get you through the party season.

Even with the hectic pace of the holidays, it’s still possible to look fabulous by making a few adjustments to your beauty routine.

The holiday season can be incredibly busy for all of us. There are trees to decorate, cards to write, cookies to bake and all of those shopping trips to the mall. It’s exhausting just thinking about it. But the most fun of all is attending the holiday parties and, of course, the party of the year––New Year’s Eve. You’ve got the perfect dress. You’ve found the perfect shoes. But with the hectic schedule and no time to primp, how can you possibly look your most fabulous?

No worries. Here are some beauty tips to get you through the party season seamlessly:

No More Kiss-Away Lips

Holiday parties always involve a lot of kissing. We kiss hello, we kiss goodbye and we kiss under the mistletoe. The last thing we want to do is spend the whole night reapplying our favorite holiday shade of lipstick. Remember, for every family member you kiss on the cheek, you are most likely giving them a take-home gift of your lipstick on their face. So, to keep your lipstick intact, avoid the glossy and go matte. First, apply a layer of your favorite lip balm to keep lips hydrated. Then apply your favorite shade of matte lipstick. Your lips will look kissable a lot longer and you won’t have to worry about leaving your mark on everyone’s cheek.

Holiday Nail Nuisances

Our hands definitely take a beating during the holiday season. Gift-wrapping, baking or just playing in the snow is not great for our holiday party manicure. But who even has time to stop and get a manicure this time of year? If you happen to chip a nail and ruin your perfect polish, no worries. This is the one time of the year when a glittery polish is totally on trend. Rather than re-polish your nails, just apply a bit of glittery polish with a clear or complementary base to the tips of your nails. The glitter will blend beautifully and hide the chips beneath.

Bye-Bye Flyaways

Between the weather, the dry air, the forced heat and our favorite winter scarf and hat, our hair doesn’t stand a chance. Flyaways definitely become normal this time of year. Not a big deal if you are home wrapping presents, but a big deal if you are at your husband’s office party. Keep a travel size bottle of hairspray in your bag at all times to tame those pesky little hairs. Gently comb the flyaways back down to keep your hair looking smooth and polished. If you have a spare toothbrush, give it a quick blast of hair spray and focus on just the flyaway pieces. Your hair will maintain its polished party look all night, and you won’t look like you have an over-sprayed helmet head.

Mascara Mishap

Long, lush lashes can really make your holiday look. But when you’re rushing to put your face on, the last thing you need is a mascara mess up. Always use an eyelash curler to give your lashes that extra oomph they so deserve. But when applying your mascara, be careful not to make a mess. There’s nothing worse than messy mascara! Try placing a spoon on your eyelid as you swipe your mascara on. This way if there’s a mishap, it will end up on the spoon and not your eyelids.

Stylize Your Hair with Zero Effort

No time for the salon but in desperate need of a glamorous holiday do? Go simple. Pull your hair back in a loose ponytail, elegant braid or even a low chignon, and then tuck in a sparkly piece of jewelry for added flair. Secure with a few sticky bobby pins (just spray your bobby pins with some hair spray and allow to dry before inserting), and your hair will be ready to ring in the New Year. A simple hairstyle will be kicked up a notch just by adding a bit of sparkle.

That’s it. Follow these tips during the holiday party season and you’ll look fabulous as you celebrate with your dear friends and family.

Skin Care in Your 20s: Maintain Your Youthful Skin

October 20, 2016

The right products will benefit your skin.

Different times in life call for different skin care regimens. Here are a few beauty secrets for you young ones in your 20s.

Ahh, to be young again. I certainly don’t want to date myself, but I barely remember my twenties at this point. Don’t get me wrong, I embrace my age; each new decade comes with a whole new world of experiences. One thing I certainly remember is the transition from teenage years into the 20s being a big one. It’s in our 20s when we come of age. Doors are opened to a whole new world of both bad and good when it comes to skin.

In teenage years, waking up with a tiny blemish was disastrous. In your twenties, however, you have a whole slew of new things to worry about. The first signs of aging are starting to appear, making it more challenging to keep your youthful skin. It’s time to take a look at your current skin care regimen and the individual products you’re using, and perhaps make some lifelong adjustments. It’s better to start with good skin care habits early than wait until your youthful skin looks more mature.

Remember when you turned in your training wheels for the big girl bike? Well, it’s time to do the exact same thing with your skin care regimen. If you’re in your twenties, here are five beauty secrets that you need to know.

Scrubbing is a Must

It’s been engrained into our brains from a very young age that facial cleansing is a must. We know that it’s something that we must do every single morning when we rise and shine, and every single evening before going to bed. Cleansers help to remove all of the dirt, oil and other impurities from the skin. Women, removing makeup is an absolute must, and even more so as we enter our twenties.

In addition to daily cleansing, now is the time to kick things up a notch with a good exfoliating scrub. Scrubs are essential when it comes to getting rid of those drab, dead skin cells that build up on the surface. Those yucky, dead skin cells can clog our pores and lead to breakouts. We all want to avoid breakouts at every cost, no matter what age. In addition to removing the dead skin cells and helping you achieve the look of youthful skin, a proper exfoliation also allows all of your other skin care products to work better. Just by removing that barrier of excess skin cells will allow your serum, toner, day and nighttime creams to penetrate deeper into your skin so you’ll receive their maximum benefits. Invest in a good facial exfoliating scrub immediately and commit to scrubbing your face up to three times a week to keep your youthful looking skin.

Secret Weapon: The Right Serum

Many people don’t even know what a skin serum is and they certainly don’t understand just how important serums are when it comes to maintaining youthful looking skin. When you’re in your twenties, consider adding a serum to your daily skin care regimen. It’s the one beauty secret all 20-somethings need to know!

Replenish Thirsty Skin

When you’re in your twenties, your lifestyle may change considerably. New responsibilities arise, which means you may need to say so long to late nights on the prowl and sleeping in the next morning. You may have a bit more stress in your life and your “beauty sleep” may be compromised. It’s essential to make sure your youthful skin has all of the proper hydration that it needs to look and function at its best. Invest in a good facial moisturizer and night cream right away. Never miss an opportunity to moisturize your skin. Proper hydration will keep your skin looking young and fresh. You may have been able to skip your night creams up until now, but in your 20s, start taking advantage of those products that will deliver benefits to your skin while you catch some much-needed zzzzzs.

Add Eye Products to Your Arsenal

Before the age of twenty, there’s little attention to the skin around eyes. But, like many things in life, there will come that moment when its importance becomes very obvious. Now is the time to make the leap into adding eye products into your skin care regimen. The skin around your eyes is different than the skin elsewhere on the body because it lacks in both sweat and oil glands. That means this area of your face is highly susceptible to dehydration. Also keep in mind that first signs of aging usually pop up around your eyes. It usually starts out gradual with just a tiny expression line and then bam! One day you suddenly wake up with crow’s feet. Invest in a hydrating eye cream and/or a firming eye gel. Give your eyes the extra tender, loving care they deserve. By the time you reach the age of 30, you’ll be very glad that you did.

Become Familiar with the Term “Anti-Aging”

Anti-aging products are not just for mom and grandma. If you’re in your twenties, you need to embrace this term whole-heartedly. These words are very positive, and will surely become your go-to words when investing in skin care products. Our skin ages at different rates due to many different factors, including our lifestyle. Why not invest in anti-aging products as a proactive measure to keep skin looking good? Do it now. Trust me. Secret or no secret, this is something you must do in your twenties. You must put up the good fight against the signs of aging at all costs. Look for creams, serums and lotions with anti-aging benefits across all categories. This includes fine lines, wrinkles, spots and moisturization. You’ll be glad that you did.

What’s the best way to remove unwanted hair?

October 14, 2016

Hair Removal 101: What’s the best way to remove unwanted hair? | Herbalife Beauty AdviceWaxing, shaving, threading, and more … learn the best way to remove unwanted facial or body hair!

Hair removal is a subject that elicits strong opinions. After all, it’s something most people have to contend with – from just a few stray hairs to a whole forest, most people feel that they have at least a couple of wayward hairs that need to be managed. But what’s the best way to do it? Whether it’s shaving, waxing, threading or newer technologies, there are so many options for hair removal that deciding what’s right for you can be overwhelming. I’ve compiled this guide to work through some of the advantages and disadvantages of each hair removal method, so you can ultimately choose the best hair removal method for you!

Hair removal 101: Learn about your options

Hair removal method: Shaving

Shaving is the process of removing hair with a sharp razor to cut the hair off at the skin’s surface. This method of hair removal can be used on virtually any body part, and is often the go-to method for men who like the feel of a close shave. Shaving works best if you have light or fine hair and, trust me, a sharp blade will make the world of difference when it comes to shave quality and potential discomfort.

Pros: Shaving can be an inexpensive way to get rid of unwanted hair. Done correctly, it should be painless and shaving can be effective for short-term hair removal.
Cons: Shaving may get rid of hair, but will only keep hair away for a few days in the best case. Hair reappears faster than it would with other methods…there’s a reason for the saying ‘five o-clock shadow’! Shaving is also not recommended as a first choice hair removal system for those with very dark body hair, because you may still be able to see the hair root just below the skin even after shaving. Also keep in mind that because you’re working with a razor, you’re susceptible to cuts and razor burn.
Bottom line: If you need a quick fix for getting rid of body hair, shaving will do the trick. Just beware that hair will reappear quickly and blunt ends created by shaving can exacerbate stubble.

Hair removal method: Waxing

Waxing is an age-old method of hair removal that entails putting warm wax over an area of unwanted hair, then using a cloth or paper strip to rip hair out by the follicle. It works well for those with dark or coarse hair.

Pros: With waxing, hair appears to grows back more slowly because you are removing each hair directly by the follicle. You will typically be hair-free for about two to eight weeks depending on the texture of your hair and your personal hair growth cycle. Waxing can be relatively inexpensive depending on whether you choose to go to a professional or attempt it at home. Many people say that the pain of waxing diminishes each time but individual experiences do vary.
Cons: Ouch! Waxing is known to be painful. You’ll also need to pay attention to your exfoliating routine to ward off ingrown hairs.
Bottom line: Waxing is good for keeping unwanted hair away for a few weeks at a time. Waxing is a great solution for larger body areas such as legs, arms, and underarms, for a few weeks. Be prepared to feel a small amount of pain to achieve smooth skin.

Hair removal method: Sugaring

Sugaring is a form of hair removal that’s very similar to waxing: hair is removed at the root. Sugaring involves applying a warm gel or paste to your skin, then removing the ‘sugar’ with a cotton or muslin strip. Sugaring paste is also usually made from natural ingredients such as sugar, honey and lemon.

Pros: Sugaring paste or gel is usually a mixture of natural ingredients. This can mean there is less risk of skin irritation, making sugaring a great option for those with sensitive skin. The risk of accidental burning is also reduced because sugaring paste or gel is typically applied at a lower temperature than wax. Similar to waxing, sugaring will keep hair away for two to eight weeks.
Cons: Much like waxing, there is a pain factor associated to this method of hair removal. It can also be difficult to find salons that offer sugaring as a service because most offer waxing. If sugaring is available, it tends to be a little more costly than waxing. For both sugaring and waxing, ensure the salon or practitioner maintains good hygiene standards.
Bottom line: If you have sensitive skin, can bear the pain, and are willing to pay a little more, sugaring is a great hair removal option. Hair will stay away longer and, over time, your follicles may be less noticeable. Sugaring can be a great long-term hair removal method.

Hair removal method: Threading

Threading is an ancient form of hair removal that originated in the Middle East and South Asia. As the name suggests, threading involves using a cotton thread that is twisted around individual hairs, then pull the hair out at the root. Threading is a typical choice for eyebrows or other small areas of unwanted hair (particularly on the face).

Pros: Threading is much quicker than tweezing, usually taking only a few minutes to achieve a polished brow area. It’s an inexpensive way to get shapely eyebrows, and the pain is about the same as plucking. If you go to an experienced professional, they can quickly shape your brows to the arch that best suits your face and eye structure.
Cons: Threading is recommended as a hair removal method on small areas; it’s not an option for removing body hair. It can be very painful for men because men have thicker facial hair.
Recently, there have been concerns around the hygiene of threading and you’ll need to decide how you feel about the process – if you’re unsure, ask to watch the technique before booking your appointment. If done incorrectly, hair won’t be pulled from the roots and may instead be snapped at skin level, which means noticeable regrowth occurs sooner.
Bottom line: Threading is a great hair removal option for the eyebrow area or for women looking to remove any other unwanted facial hair. Make sure to ask your friends for recommendations or do your research and go to an experienced professional.

Hair removal method: Depilatory Creams

Depilatory creams are chemical-based creams that remove hair by breaking down the hair structure itself. A depilatory cream is applied to an area of unwanted hair, and removed after 5-10 minutes, usually with a warm washcloth.

Pros: A depilatory cream will remove hair with less pain than other methods of hair removal. It’s a quick procedure, can be done at home, and most depilatory creams are relatively inexpensive.
Cons: Depilatory cream results will last longer than shaving, but not as long as waxing or sugaring. You can expect to see hair resurfacing after a few days, though it sometimes lasts as long as a week. One common complaint about depilatory creams is the smell – although this has improved greatly in recent years!
Also, be careful not to leave a depilatory cream on for too long as it could damage the skin. As always, follow instructions and be sure to try a patch test before using a depilatory cream for the first time. Some people may find that they have an instant reaction or will feel itching or burning within a few hours of use, so a patch test is critical!
Bottom line: If you want to remove body hair quickly with minimal pain, and want results that will last longer than shaving, then a depilatory cream is a good option. Just make sure not to leave it on too long!

Permanent hair removal methods: Laser hair removal and electrolysis

Laser hair removal and electrolysis offer the closest thing to permanent hair removal available, but they certainly aren’t an option for everyone. ‘Laser’ refers to an intense pulse of light, which means it carries a risk of burns and should only be performed by a certified professional. Electrolysis involves inserting a fine needle into the hair shaft to destroy the hair producing cells.

Pros: These options are often billed as permanent hair removal, and some people have been able to say goodbye to unwanted hair for good.
Cons: Both electrolysis and laser hair removal can be painful – although, subjectively, I’d say less so than waxing or sugaring. Costs can also be high and, unfortunately, these methods aren’t suitable for all skin types. If you have darker skin then you may find these options are not recommended. Laser hair removal works by firing a pulse of intense light at a hair, ultimately damaging the follicle (where the hair is produced). This can reduce or stop hair growth, but is most effective if there is a significant difference between the hair color and the color of the surrounding skin. In very light hair (white, red or blonde) melanin levels are too low for laser hair treatment to be effective.
Bottom line: Put in some research to decide if lasering or electrolysis is right for you. Know that you’ll have to be patient; each treatment must be scheduled according to your hair growth cycle and usually several treatments are needed to remove hair permanently. Ultimately, laser hair removal can be an effective way to decrease the quantity of unwanted body hair, but you’ll need to weigh the pros against time and cost.

***

Even though technology has improved significantly over time, it doesn’t mean that more modern hair removal techniques are any better than ancient ones. In my experience, I don’t think there is a single best way to get rid of hair, but through trial and error you will discover your preference and the best hair removal solution for you.

Bad Hair Days: Banish Them Forever

October 14, 2016

Clean hair is manageable hair.

You don’t need a bad hair day in your life, so let’s make them a thing of the past.

We all love those days when our hair is soft, , shiny and manageable. When our hair decides it’s not going to cooperate and takes on a mind of its own, things can go from good to bad, and bad to worse quickly. A bad hair day can seriously zap our self-esteem and make us want to go into hiding. I have on several occasions wanted to call in sick to work because of my unruly hair! Now, of course, I’ve never done that, wink-wink, but the thought has crossed my mind. Here are some things we can do to help our hair look its best so we can resist the urge to hide when a bad hair day strikes.

Stop the Hair Abuse

I confess that I abuse the heck out of my hair. I know it’s not good, but sometimes it’s the fastest way to get my hair under control. Even though I turn to heat styling and pile on products, I know that long term, I’m doing more harm than good. This is one of those times when I need you to listen to what I say, not follow what I do. And, hair abuse is not gender biased. I know some guys out there who spend way more time fussing with their hair than some of us ladies. The bottom line is, in order to have more good hair days, we must be kind to our hair.

Stopping the abuse is our first priority. Put down those super-hot hair dryers, curling tongs and flat irons, and give your hair a break. Excess heat is damaging, as it depletes moisture from our hair and scalp and, over time, can strip away our natural protective oils. The result? Hair that’s dry, frazzled and prone to breaking.

Give your hair a break from the heat. If possible, attempt to air dry at least once a week to give your hair a break from damaging styling tools. When you do use heat styling tools, use the lower settings on your styling devices and try a heat protection spray to create a barrier between your hair and the heat to help prevent damage. The sooner you stop the abuse, the healthier your hair will start to look.

Make Time for Hair Care

Some days are so hectic that your hair just doesn’t have a chance. And most bad hair days are really your own fault. You may be better off skipping your morning shampoo if you don’t have the time to do it right.

There are a few simple rules to proper shampooing:
  • Scrub your scalp to remove excess oils and product buildup.
  • Remove all traces of shampoo and conditioner when you rinse. Most shampoos and conditioners need plenty of water in order to be effective and remove dirt and residue, and to release their conditioning ingredients. Hair that hasn’t been rinsed thoroughly can be limp, oily and unmanageable.
  • Just when you think you’re done rinsing, rinse some more. And to help seal the hair’s cuticle and give you more shine, rinse with cool or lukewarm water, never hot.
    Beware of Product Overload

So, you just put in the extra time and effort to be sure you rinsed all of the shampoo and conditioner out of your hair. Then what do you do? If you’re like me, you start piling on the styling agents—protection spray, hair serum, styling gels, mousse, hair sprays and shining agents. It never ends.
Truth is, the more products you pile on, the greater your chances are of having a really bad hair day. Hair products can weigh your hair down and make it look dull and lifeless. Lighten up on the products and let your hair breathe.

Quick Tips to Make Every Day a “Good Hair Day”
      1) Look for powerful moisturizing and conditioning ingredients when you choose your shampoo and conditioner.
      2) Go sulfate free! Sulfates are harsh, drying and can strip the color from your hair.
      3) Just when you think you’re done rinsing your hair, keep rinsing and count to ten.
      4) Your hair is weakest when it is wet, so be gentle when combing wet hair and avoid putting it into a ponytail or braid until it is thoroughly dry. This will help prevent damage.
      5) Consider investing in a good hairdryer with ionic technology. It may help your hair dry faster and with less damage. Remember, the louder your blow dryer is, the lower the quality may be.
      6) Ease up on the products to avoid buildup which could cause lifeless, unmanageable, oily hair.
Let’s face it—the only thing worse than a bad day is a bad hair day. If you follow these quick and simple tips, you can banish the bad hair days forever. Healthy hair is happy hair!

Top tips to beat body acne

October 7, 2016

A clean back can help you have a clear back.

Blemishes and breakouts don’t necessarily just appear on your face. Acne can show up anywhere on your body. Here’s how you can beat it.

We all fret over a tiny blemish, especially when it shows up at the most inconvenient time. Men and women both suffer from breakouts, and I can assure you that nobody is thrilled when it happens. Much like facial breakouts, body breakouts can ruin your day, so what can you do about it? The importance of hygiene when it comes to the overall health and appearance of skin cannot be overstated. There are no worse culprits than dirt and bacteria when it comes to blemishes and breakouts, so here are some rules to follow.

Facial Acne

Everyone, men and women alike, must cleanse their face and their body every single day. Facial cleansing is a must and should be done in the morning and the evening before bedtime. Choose a cleanser that is most appropriate for your skin type. If you have frequent breakouts, your skin is probably on the oily side, so choose a gel-based cleanser that’ll help control and remove sebum from the skin.

Bonus Tip: If you have frequent breakouts on your cheeks, be sure you are cleaning your makeup brushes on a regular basis. And, make sure your telephones are cleaned regularly as well. The transfer of bacteria can only cause problems for your skin.

Neck Breakouts

As if facial breakouts weren’t bad enough, some of you deal with breakouts on your neck area, too. If your hair is long enough where it touches your neck and shoulders, then you must keep it clean. The constant contact between skin and hair can transfer oils, bacteria and hair products to your skin, causing irritation and breakouts. Keep it pulled away from your skin, especially while sleeping.

Bonus Tip:
Be wary of collars that are too tight. The tightness of fabrics can irritate your skin. If you wear a lot of necklaces and scarfs, keep the jewelry and the scarfs clean to limit transfer of bacteria to your neck area. Lastly, when it comes to cleansing, always treat your neck as an extension of your face and be sure to wash in the morning and night to remove any dirt.

Shoulder Irritation

Have you noticed blemishes and breakouts on your shoulder area? There are a couple of things to think about. Make sure your bra straps are resting comfortably on your shoulders and aren’t too tight. If you’re wearing tank tops, the same thing goes. For men and women who carry messenger bags, back packs or purses, keep them light. A bag that’s too heavy, coupled with friction, can lead to skin irritation and breakouts.

Leg Breakouts

There’s nothing more frustrating than finding breakouts on your legs and thighs. When it comes to the upper part of your legs, there can be several culprits that cause those unsightly pimples. In many cases, you may be having a reaction to body lotions, creams, shower gels, laundry detergents, bleach, dryer sheets, you name it. Pay attention if you notice your skin breaking out. For lower legs, you may notice irritation after shaving. Be sure to use a fresh, clean razor, warm water and be wary of leaving depilatory creams on for too long, or applying self tanner right after a fresh shave.

Bonus Tip: Just like the rest of your body, your legs don’t like to be wrapped too tight. Opt for looser fitting pants and remove any elastic fabrics as soon as possible after a long day.

Acne on Your Rear

I take it back; there is something worse than finding breakouts on your legs, like finding breakouts on your butt! Make sure to keep those undies clean, not too tight and find a material that’s breathable. Again, be conscientious of the laundry detergent you use, as some are filled with deodorizers and detergents that can be irritating to your skin. Make sure to keep your backside moisturized as well.

Back Acne (or Bacne)

Back acne or bacne is very common. There are so many contributors to back acne, including tight clothing, excessive sweating, not showering right after exercising and laying your back against dirty athletic equipment or even a yoga mat. The key here comes right back to cleansing your skin to keep it free from germs and bacteria.

More body acne tips:
  • Bathe, shower and embrace a daily facial skin care regimen.
  • Look for blemish fighting products in all forms, including facial care, spot treatments and even body washes and soaps.
  • Hand sanitizer, especially in a spray form, can be your best friend when it comes to avoiding dirt and germs that could be causing your breakouts.

Bright Smile: 5 Tips to Keep Your Teeth Looking Good

September 16, 2016

Be diligent about dental hygiene.

There are so many reasons to smile on any given day. Here are some tips to help you keep your teeth white—most of these are simple and easy. I hope they’ll help you start smiling confidently and show the world your beautiful, white teeth.

Why Should You Smile?

Have you ever heard someone say “So and so can light up the room with his/her smile”? Well there’s a reason for that saying. It’s been said that a smile is an important human gesture because it can lift your mood, the moods of others, and bring a feeling of positivity. A smile is often one of the first features we notice, and keeping your teeth white is a significant part of smiling confidently.

A smile can also help you de-stress because it signals to your brain that you’re in a good mood (even if you’re not). Another good reason to smile is because it leads to laughter, and who doesn’t feel good after a good laugh?
Now that you know the reasons to smile, let’s talk about how to put your best smile forward by keeping your teeth healthy and white!

How to Keep Your Teeth White

There are professional ways to get whiter teeth, but you can always incorporate a few simple steps into your daily routine to help keep your teeth white. I’m talking about prevention today; if you take good care of your pearly whites, you may not even need to take professional measures.

Be Diligent About Dental Hygiene

Most dentists recommend brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing them on a daily basis. Not only will this be good for the health of your teeth, but it can also help keep your teeth white by removing buildup.

Avoid Beverages that Cause Stains

Rule of thumb for this tip: if it can stain a white cotton t-shirt, it can stain your teeth. Some of the common culprits in this category are coffee, tea, red wine, dark sodas and fruit juices. I’m not saying to cut these beverages out altogether, but be mindful about how much you consume to keep your teeth white.

Don’t Light Up

In addition to causing many other health concerns, smoking can also cause discoloration of your teeth. Some of the ingredients in cigarettes, such as nicotine and tar, have been known to cause brown tooth stains. Smokers also often have lowered saliva flow to the mouth, and saliva acts as a natural cleanser of teeth.

Rinse After You Eat

Eat your fruits and veggies, and then rinse your mouth with water when you’re done. Dark colored fruits and vegetables have exceptional nutrition benefits, but can also stain your teeth. So, make sure you eat foods like blueberries and beets, but just rinse your mouth afterwards to help prevent tooth stains.

Choose the Right Lip Color

This tip is for the ladies. Getting whiter teeth can be as simple as choosing the right lip color. Pick a color with blue undertones, as these shades will counteract against any yellow shades found on your teeth. These shades include rich reds, berry colors, pinks with a cool tint, or nude colors. Avoid lip shades that are bright orange or reds with warm undertones, as they can accentuate tooth stains.
